The Students Concluded the 1st Trimester of the School on Wednesday, November 21st. Here are some comments from their self-evaluations:
“This trimester was good. I can’t believe I did all that work especially coming from a school where I didn’t do anything.”
“Did not miss a day. Never was late. Had all my homework. Always ready for class. Always have a good attitude.”
“Academically this trimester has been a challenge for me because I didn’t know a lot of stuff and this school is harder then my other school, but after a couple of weeks I got the hang of it and it’s not that hard anymore.”
“I’m happy with my grades, my effort, and my learning.”
“I think that I did good because my average did not drop below an 85%. It is no question about whether I can do better, because I know that I can.”
“Whenever someone needs help, I never turn them away.”
“I can read 20 times better.”
“Since I have been going here, I have been learning a lot. I understand most or all of my work and if I don’t understand it, then I always have someone to help me.
“I’m looking forward to the 2nd Trimester.”
Thanksgiving Feast Held for Students
Newsflash 11/21/07 The students celebrate Thanksgiving with a delicious feast prepared by families, sponsors, and the students themselves including Ebony’s tasty sweet potato pie. The turkey was provided with plenty of homemade gravy by Trustee Aduke Hubbard. A great time was had by all. The students went around the table sharing their appreciation for family, friends, music, life, sports, the outdoors, school and of course the food. A blessing was led by student Desmond Carter before the food was passed around the table.

Newsflash 11/28/07 The classroom was overflowing with people as the 2nd Sponsor Meeting of the school term was held. Students, parents, family members, and mentors all gathered to discuss the 1st trimester and plans for the 2nd. Changes noted this year include the lengthening of homework time at the school. There was a presentation about curriculum and approaches this year as well as the impact of the new classroom space and additional tutors.
Certificates were given out to the students for achievements in the 1st Trimester. Thomas Magaha was give the Honor Award for ending the trimester with a 91.5% grade point average. Many students received attendance commendations for not missing a day of school. The attendance rate average for the 1st Trimester was 99.2%.
Much discussion centered on enrichment activities for the students including field trips. Student Kris Watt expressed the student’s desire to take a trip to Europe, but also asked for help with transportation for local excursions. Student Jackie Bales talked about the plans for a show by the students in the spring.
Sponsors expressed ideas and support for a number of fundraising activities to support the students’ activities including regular bake sales, an Avon sale and a Joe Corbi’s products sale. Several sponsors also pledged to provide home cooked meals for the students.
The Sponsors decided to hold a school Community Pot Luck Dinner on Sunday, January 27th.
Newsflash 11/27/07 The Board of Trustees met this evening for their regularly scheduled quarterly meeting. The Trustees received reports on the 1st Trimester school program as well as financial, facility , development and administration reports.
Newsflash 12/1/07 Advisory Board member Sherry Welch just sent word that Johns Hopkins University will be providing use of the Glass Pavilion for our End of Year Ceremony to be held on June 1st! This was made possible through the kindness of Salem Reiner, Director of Community Affairs for JHU. Thank you Salem and also to Sherry for helping to make this possible. The Glass Pavilion will be a terrific place to hold this special ceremony.
Newsflash 12/1/07 A surprise check arrived in the mail today from Joe Corbi’s. It is part of the Joe Corbi’s Scholarship Program. The letter, which was signed by company President Rocco Violi and Vice President Tom Glessner, stated: “Thank you for making us a part of your program to help further the benefits of your organization.”
Newsflash 12/4/07 Students Sara Ciulla and Thomas Magaha were present as the Associated Italian American Charities (AIAC) presented a generous check for The Community School at their Annual Giving/Scholarships Award Evening. The check was presented by former AIAC President Tom Iacoboni. Tom and his wife Jacque are familiar faces to our students through their frequent visits to the school over the years. Fellow AIAC members Felix Dialoiso and Chris Mazzulli, who are on our school’s Advisory Board with Tom Iacoboni, were also on hand to lend their support. The AIAC has been the single largest supporter of The Community School since they first became involved back in 2002. Our special thanks go to Tom and all of the members of AIAC for their investment in our young people. Grazie Mille!
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Asssociated Italian American Charities traces its roots back to the conclusion of World War II when the local Italian community helped raise money for those devastated by the war.

The group first known as Maryland Aid for Italy evolved into the AIAC with their focus on charitable works in the local community. Its members are known for their kindness and direct involvement in improving lives and communities.

Newsflash 12/5/07 School supporter Gayle Erdman introduced two very special visitors to the students today. Vincent Rocco was an infantryman during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. His visit was to learn more about the school in advance of being a special guest lecturer in our U.S. History course. Mr. Rocco and his wife Angie had a very meaningful discussion with the students about motivation for learning and their future goals. Mr. Rocco is an electrical engineer who used to work for CBS and designed the first microwave TV Electronic Newsgathering System. The students are looking forward to speaking with Mr. Rocco again.

Students Jackie Bales and Steven Martin celebrate their birthdays at the Holiday Open House. Steven turned 17 on December 11th and Jackie celebrates her 16th birthday on Saturday, December 15th.

Newsflash 12/11/07 The Holiday Open House was a lively celebration with many folks attending and enjoying themselves.
