“I visited this extraordinary place last week. I don’t know if you’ve been there, The Community School. It’s extraordinary. It’s a one room school house...It has a remarkable teacher in front of the classroom. Some of the things that everybody says are the impediments to instruction are exactly what’s going on in that room, and it is used as the trampoline to success...The key thing for me is that in that room there’s a key to success which is how a group of kids and an adult working together and the ethos, if I can use that word, is all about success and responsibility for the kids. Our alternative schools should be exactly that way. Our comprehensive high schools have to move from fixed notions of what should be going on in a class to highly flexible approaches to students based upon what they are learning.”
Dr. Andres Alonso, Superintendentt Baltimore City Publ;ic Schools 2/18/08
NOTE: The Sunpapers did an interview with Dr. Alonso where he expressed his excitement about visiting our school. You can see the interview by clicking on this link. The part on our school is at 9 minutes on the video and you can fast forward there. CLICK HERE
Newsflash 3/3/08 The 3rd Trimester of the school began with a field trip to Washington D.C. The students visited both the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, both of which have been featured prominently in the U.S. History course. The day was capped by attendance at a play performed by the City at Peace Youth Program at the National Theatre. The play raised many issues particular to youth and captivated their attention. The full play will be performed in Washington on April 4th and the students are hoping to attend. Thanks to Sponsors Pebbles Bayer & Dolly McCauley for helping with transportation and chaperoning.

There were reports on the school program and discussion about plans for the 3rd Trimester and the 2008/2009 term. Students Thomas Magaha and Kenyon Paye received Certificates for ending the 2nd Trimester on the Honor Roll and also for perfect attendance. 100% Attendance certificates were given to Jackie Bales, Jarrad Gladden, Kris Watt, and Steven Martin, and Perfect Attendance
Fast Fact: The attendance average for the school as of the end of the 2nd trimester is 98.8%.
Newsflash 3/18/08 The students were raptured as they listened to Advisory Board member Jim Riley recount the events of his life. Jim spoke as part of our “Journeys” series where individuals share stories about the course of their lives. Jim spoke about overcoming hardship through determination and hard work as well as the central role that school played in his life. His story was a reminder that we must believe in ourselves and be determined to meet life’s challenges as we pursue our dreams. Thank you Jim.

Newsflash 3/20/08 A lot of testing, a feast, and a movie marked the last day of class before spring break. The meal included a ham donated by Tom Iacoboni, Gary Heathcote’s dirt pudding, stuffing made by Pebbles Bayer, banana bread baked by Alice Ciulla, and some sweet potato pies made by Ebony Love. Class resumes on Tuesday, April 1st. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Newsflash 3/22/08 Special thanks to Advisory Board member Felix Dialoiso for completing the electrical work on the back building to get us through inspection, friend and all around school handyman, Risasi Hubbard for securing the wheelchair ramp, and cofounder and 30 year school volunteer Eddie Gavin for installing the gutters on the rear building and fixing the flashing torn down by the wind storm.
Newsflash 3/27/08 The school has received a letter from the Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Foundation awarding a 2 year grant through their Maryland Small Grants program. The funds will help cover general operating expenses for the school and contribute toward establishing an adult education program. We appreciate their kindness and partnership.
