“I visited this extraordinary place last week.  I don’t know if you’ve been there, The Community School.  It’s extraordinary.  It’s a one room school house...It has a remarkable teacher in front of the classroom.  Some of the things that everybody says are the impediments to instruction are exactly what’s going on in that room, and it is used as the trampoline to success...The key thing for me is that in that room there’s a key to success which is how a group of kids and an adult working together and the ethos, if I can use that word, is all about success and responsibility for the kids.  Our alternative schools should be exactly that way.  Our comprehensive high schools have to move from fixed notions of what should be going on in a class to highly flexible approaches to students based upon what they are learning.”

Dr. Andres Alonso, Superintendent

Baltimore City Public Schools 2/18/08

NOTE: The Sunpapers did an interview with Dr. Alonso where he expressed his excitement about visiting our school. You can see the interview by clicking on this link.  The part on our school is at 9 minutes on the video and you can fast forward there.  CLICK HERE

Newsflash 5/8/08  Tom’s nephew JD Culotta and niece Jessica visited the school today.  JD just returned from a deployment to the Gulf aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer, The Port Royal. JD spoke about his voyage from the ship’s base in Pearl Harbor through the Gulf. The students were interested in the geography, politics and culture of the areas he visited as well as his experiences in the Navy.

Student Jarrad Gladden is now playing for the Baltimore Broncos, a local, first year semiprofessional football organization.  He is excited about this opportunity and is enjoying the physical activity and challenge.

Newsflash 5/2/08   For the 2nd straight year the Lila Amsel William’s Children’s Foundation has provided funds to help support keeping our student food pantry stocked. Thank you for your kindness.

Newsflash 5/20/08   The students were honored to host guest lecturer Vince Rocco today.  Mr. Rocco shared his experience as a soldier in the U.S. infantry during the Battle  of the Bulge in World War II. He both talked about the strategic importance of the battle and his personal involvement and recollections. His presence was a meaningful contribution to the students’ study of this period of American History. We salute you Mr. Rocco!

Newsflash 5/19/08   The school was visited today by Betsy Krieger and Karen Kreisberg representing the Zanvyl & Isabelle Krieger Fund. Betsy and Karen observed class and then heard from the students about the school and their plans for the future.  This was followed by a tour of the school. We appreciate their interest in the school and the time they took to talk with our students.

Newsflash 5/2o/08   Advisory Board member, longtime supporter of the school and volunteer Carol Berman came by the school today to bring a check from the Sally Kearsley Scholarship Fund administered by St. John’s of Baltimore City United Methodist Congregation. This marks the 5th year that St. John’s has been a partner in our efforts.  Thank you Carol and everyone at St. John’s. The friends and  family of Sally Kearsley should know that they have helped create opportunities for a better education and life for our students.

Students Kenyon, Kris, Steven, Thomas, Destini and Erin  listening to guest speaker Vincent Rocco.

Newsflash 5/22/08   Class of 2005 Alumnus Lauren Dure greeted the class first thing this morning. Lauren gave a presentation as part of our Journeys series talking about overcoming difficulties in her life. Students described her presentation as “awesome” and “inspirational” with one student explaining, “She told us more than her story; she was trying to teach us a lesson.” Lauren will be completing her studies to become a LPN in November and will continue on her goal to become a nurse practitioner.

Newsflash 5/21/08   The most energetic Sponsor Meeting of the year was held tonight with a packed room. Every student attended and all were represented by their sponsors. Items discussed included the End of Year Ceremony and initial plans for the 2008/2009 term. The main item on the agenda was an evaluation of this past year. Sponsors openly talked about the program and the effect on their students as well as ideas for making it even better. Each sponsor fills out a 3 page detailed evaluation with results to be shared throughout the organization.

Newsflash 5/29/08   The Students were fascinated today as they viewed the Body World exhibit at the Maryland Science Center.  They had been looking forward to this trip since the exhibit’s arrival this past winter.  The cost put it just out of reach until Board member Sherry Welch determined to make it happen!  Through her friend Tom Hooper and the generosity and kindness of Maryland Science Center President Van Reiner, the students were given VIP passes.  Mr. Reiner greeted the students upon their arrival and invited them to tour the whole facility with his complements.  Thank you Mr. Reiner and all the kind people connected with the Maryland Science Center.

Newsflash 5/29/08   Today was the last official day of school for the 2007/2008 term.  The students completed their coursework, straightened their files, and turned in their portfolios. Each student also completed several written evaluations. The students completed a 9 page evaluation on the school covering everything from coursework to the structure of the school. In addition they did a written evaluation of the teachers and a self evaluation. Each class also did an oral evaluation with the teacher to discuss what worked and what could be better.  All of this information will be used to improve the program for the 2008/2009 term.
