Left: Everyone present participated in the ribbon cutting as members and supporters of the school celebrated the opening of our new conference room and learning space.
Below:Part of the Ceremony involved the planting of a tree in front of the school. From the youngest to the eldest, many helped by throwing a shovel of dirt to help with the planting. (Thank you to neighbors Ashley & Kate Trant for providing the tree.)
With the excitement of the celebration still fresh, students were quick to occupy the new space working hard to advance their studies. Pictured around the table, left to right: Destini Miller, Jackie Bales, Gary Heathcote, Desmond Carter, Thomas Magaha, Kristophor Watt & Russell Morgan.
During the Celebration everyone was given thanks for helping to make this progress possible, especially the workers, contributors, volunteers, and supporters of our zoning appeal. Special acknowledgment was given to Felix Dialoiso, Eddie Gavin, Peggy Lashbrook with the Development Committee, the France-Merrick Foundation, Justin Switzer, Ken & Paulette Bancroft, Mary Pat Clarke, and Ken Mills of Struever Bros Eccles & Rouse. Our thanks also go to all of those that planned, staffed, and provided the food and decorations for this event including: Ginny & Dick Bell, Sherry Welch, Dave Bayer, Peggy Lashbrook, Justin Switzer and the students and volunteers of the school.

Newsflash 11/11/07 The Wachovia Foundation made a generous grant of $3,000 to the school. Kevin Dow, Community Affairs Officer at the bank wrote, “Our mission at Wachovia is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life, and make a positive difference where we work and live. Your organization is vital in accomplishing these goals and many others. Wachovia is proud to support your organization’s commitment to the community.”
Newsflash 11/12/07 The students had a surprise visit from our Class of 2003 Alumnus Jason Hammonds today. Jason just completed basic training with the 82nd Airborne where he was a leader in his platoon. He is on his way to more training and we wish him a safe journey and Godspeed.
Newsflash 11/21/07 The students celebrate Thanksgiving with a delicious feast prepared by families, sponsors, and the students themselves including Ebony’s tasty sweet potato pie. The turkey was provided with plenty of homemade gravy by Trustee Aduke Hubbard. A great time was had by all. The students went around the table sharing their appreciation for family, friends, music, life, sports, the outdoors, school and of course the food. A blessing was led by student Desmond Carter before the food was passed around the table.

Newsflash 11/1/07 Advisory Board Member Ken Bancroft brought Mary Ann Facente, head of the Educational Division of M & T Bank, to the school today. Ms. Facente observed class and talked with the students about their experiences and goals. The students discussed their future plans including college and career.
Newsflash 11/19/07 Abell Foundation staff member Bonnie Legro visited the school today. She remarked about the significant progress that the school has made since her last visit a year ago with an increase in the number of students and improvements to the facility. The school is grateful for the support that the foundation has given since the visit of Foundation President Bob Embry several years ago.
The Students Concluded the 1st Trimester of the School on Wednesday, November 21st. Here are some comments from their self-evaluations:
“This trimester was good. I can’t believe I did all that work especially coming from a school where I didn’t do anything.”
“Did not miss a day. Never was late. Had all my homework. Always ready for class. Always have a good attitude.”
“Academically this trimester has been a challenge for me because I didn’t know a lot of stuff and this school is harder then my other school, but after a couple of weeks I got the hang of it and it’s not that hard anymore.”
“I’m happy with my grades, my effort, and my learning.”
“I think that I did good because my average did not drop below an 85%. It is no question about whether I can do better, because I know that I can.”
“Whenever someone needs help, I never turn them away.”
“I can read 20 times better.”
“Since I have been going here, I have been learning a lot. I understand most or all of my work and if I don’t understand it, then I always have someone to help me.
“I’m looking forward to the 2nd Trimester.”
