Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke shows City Council Chambers to Steven, Josh, Desmond, Jarrad, and Sherry.  Kenyon prepares for future role as City Council President.

Newsflash 10/5/07  All of us at The Community School welcome Rusty Boyce as our new Administrative Assistant. She brings a strong background in nonprofit administration, most recently as Associate Executive Director for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.  Rusty will be a real asset to our organization as we continue in this period of growth.

Newsflash 10/2/07  Ken Bancroft presented a check for $5,000 to the students today.  This donation was from a close friend of his who wishes to remain Anonymous.  The donor visited the school in the spring, along with Ken and his wife Paulette, where she observed the class in action and talked with the students.  She was so impressed by the students that she wanted to become a new supporter of the school.  It is this kind of kindness that keeps the school going and growing.  Thank you!

Newsflash 10/2/07  The students were visited today by Beth  Prensky an officer with the MidAtlantic Banking Group of  Wachovia Bank. Beth came at the invitation of our Development Committee Chair Peggy Lashbrook to witness first hand the work that the school does.  Advisory Board Co-chair Ken Bancroft was also on hand.  Ms. Presnky stayed for several hours touring the school and talking with Ken & Peggy. She met with a group of the students including Kenyon, Steven, Desmond, Ebony, Kris, and Jarrad and heard about their experiences both in the public schools and at our school.  The students also attentively listened to Beth as she  shared her own stories.  We deeply appreciate the time she took from her day to find out about our program.

Newsflash 10/1/07  The school welcomed two new students this week.  Lindsay Bigham and Cristi Ellis.  Good luck on your paths to success Cristi & Lindsay!  A special “thank you” to their sponsors: Kelly Hess, Dolly McCauley, Thomas Wood, and Sharon Robinson for your mentoring and support of these two young women.

Joy Gramling kindly picked up a paint brush while visiting from Kentucky and painted the upstairs hallway.   Joshua Moooney is admiring her work.

Newsflash 9/28/07  We have a building permit to complete the work on the new building!  A gigantic thank you to Mary Pat Clarke for her continued diligent work to assure that Baltimore City government works.  She has been tireless on our student's behalf! Without her assistance and the many kind people at Baltimore Housing from Deputy Commissioner Braverman, to Chief of Permits Didi Elmenshawy, to Superintendent of Building Inspections John Cole to Julie in the Permits section, we certainly wouldn't have this permit in hand.  Special thanks go to Felix Dialoiso who came to the school and picked up the ball on this and carried it to the end zone.  Felix and Nick from his office made sure that everything was in order and had repeated visits to the permit office on our behalf. Continued appreciation to Eddie Gavin and to all of those volunteers and supporters that are making sure that this project stays on track. We are fortunate to have so many great folks as part of The Community School.

Special thanks also go to Advisory Board Member Felix Dialosio for taking over the coordination of the building project and generously donating all of the new electrical work at the building.

Newsflash 10/8/07  The students of The Community School now have some additional help in math class.  Susama Agarwala, who also lives in Remington, is volunteering each morning. She does this in addition to teaching undergraduates and pursuing her PhD in math at Johns Hopkins University.  Susama is a welcome addition to our school community.  In addition to directly working with students, Susama is also working on our advanced college placement math curriculum. Welcome aboard Susama!
