Everyone
Can Help
The Annual Campaign is the cornerstone of The Community School’s financial foundation. It is how contributors from all backgrounds, from modest means to financially comfortable, assure that our students continue to have the opportunity to receive a rigorous academic education, improve their lives, and find success. Contributions to this campaign have ranged from $5.00 to $5,000 and every donation counts.

Newsflash 9/15/09 Longtime local community activist and Advisory Board member Ruth Daiker visited the school today, expressed her pride in the students, and encouraged them to make the most out of this year. In addition to being an Advisor to the school, Ruth’s niece Amanda McCarty attends the school. Thanks for stopping by Ruth.
Newsflash 9/3/09 Tom Culotta and Peggy Lashbrook attended a meeting hosted by Commonweal Foundation with organizations working with young people from across the Washington D.C. area. It was an important networking event that will be continued by the Foundation over the next year.
Newsflash 9/4/09 The Combined Charity Campaign of Baltimore City had an event in War Memorial Plaza today to kick off their workplace campaign. Newsflash 9/16/09 There was a well attended and lively Sponsor Meeting held at the school tonight. After Tom Culotta opened the meeting, students Sara Ciulla and Amanda McCarty delivered a presentation on the curriculum and program of the school this term. Much of the discussion focused on the importance of education, the direction of the Baltimore City School System, the alternatives available for area young people, and the uniqueness of our school. The importance of The Community School alternative and the reliability of its nearly 30 year history was expressed by parent and student alike. Board of Trustee’s Chairperson Dave Bayer spoke about fundraising and the group made plans for the fall. There will be a Potluck Dinner on Sunday, October 4th at 6:00 that is open to everyone in the school community. The Sponsors will meet again on Wednesday, October 21st at 7:00.
Newsflash 9/9/09 Today was the 1st day of class and the students jumped right into the new term and their studies. Time was taken to review the revised handbook and students all signed a pledge to uphold the Honor Code that was then framed and hung on the classroom wall. Several students also stepped forward to assist with the functioning of the school in areas such as facility maintenance, equipment operation and record keeping. Staff members Tom Culotta and Justin Switzer will continue to work directly with the students daily. Don Riesett will continue to work with students on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as their writing mentor. Byung Joon Park is back again this year on Monday and Wednesday afternoons serving as both a tutor during Independent Study and assisting with teaching technology. Fellow Independent Study tutors Sarah Novotny and Greg Little are back as well working Wednesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons respectively. Familiar face and new tutor J.D. Culotta is volunteering on Tuesdays to help the students. Advisory Board member and Speech Pathologist Carol Berman will be working with students on Tuesdays and Peggy Lashbrook can be found on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the school working on development and general school support. Welcome back everyone and all the best to the students in this exciting new year.
Newsflash 9/16/09 The school was visited by filmmaker Maureen Martin of Johns Hopkins University
Newsflash 9/22/09 The school just received word that the Young Ambassadors from France will be visiting the school again this year on Wednesday, November 4th. This is a group of French students who are sponsored by the U.S. State Department to visit the United States for exchange and encounter with youth and families here. Natalie Verte, from AFS-France, wrote to us saying, “the visit to your school last year was one of the best moments of our stay in the US!” Our students feel the same way and are eagerly looking forward to the visit.

Newsflash 9/24/09 A group of our graduates met this evening to share stories about their college experiences this semester. They were greeted at local hotspot “The Dizz” with encouraging words by Elaine Stevens, the proprietor and longtime Remington resident. The students reviewed plans to rework the College Support Program at The Community School. Click here to see the framework of the proposal that the student’s discussed. We are very proud of all of our students and graduates and especially appreciate the effort that our college students make, in the words of our mission statement: to advance their education, improve their lives and better their community.
Student Update 9/24/09 New students C.J. Sosa and Kimberly Smith were accepted as permanent students today. When a student applies to the school he or she is accepted on a conditional basis for 10 class days when a final decision is made about staying in the school. The students complete a self-evaluation and a discussion follows that is centered on the student’s adherence to the 5 habits of a successful student: To show up everyday, on time, prepared to learn, with a positive attitude and all of the work. Kim and C.J. are off to a great start and we proudly welcome them as permanent students.

Newsflash 9/15/09 The Community School was featured at the annual client gathering held by Tony Fusco Associates at the Boumi Shrine in White Marsh this evening. Each year Tony holds this event which combines a market report, delicious dinner, and entertainment. A big part of Tony’s philosophy is the importance of sharing and giving back, so he always invites a nonprofit group to talk about the work it does. Tony spoke about his experience visiting the school before introducing Tom Culotta to speak. At the end of the evening a free will offering is taken where those gathered have the opportunity to donate to the group. The group raised $3,746 with another $500 pledged. Also attending the event from the school was Peggy Lashbrook as well as Tom and Jacque Iacoboni We deeply appreciate the kindness of Tony, his family, colleagues, associates and clients.
Student Update 9/30/09 Matt Wendler was accepted as a permanent student today. Way to go Matt! We wish you much success here at The Community School.
Student Update 9/26/09 Graduates Ebony Love and Samantha Sloat received word today that they have earned their high school diplomas. Both students didn’t wait for these state delayed results and began college in September. We are enormously proud of both of them.
